Just Oil: cold-pressed rapeseed oil
Olive oil from the Mediterranean currently has a great reputation for taste and health, but the finest UK-grown rapeseed oils give it a run for its money on both counts.
ChangeKitchen usually uses cold-pressed rapeseed oil grown from Wade Lane Farm in Staffordshire. All the processing and bottling is done on the farm, so it really is a local product. It’s a family farm which take its environmental responsibilities seriously, creating wildlife havens such as a marshland area. It’s a light, nutty oil which has won an award from Heart of England Fine Foods for its taste, and like olive oil it is high in mono-unsaturated fats (regarded as much healthier than the poly-unsaturated fats in sunflower oil, for example).
The oil is available retail and in catering packs – ChangeKitchen gets it through the Globally Local Changing Lifestyles Eco-Centre in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. (Other stockists can be found on the Just Oil website. The farm produce a number of related products, including salad dressings.
